Positive psychologist Mihaly (2004) says our nervous system can only process 60bits per second, just enough to hear one person talk. More than one person talking at the same time and it already gets distracting. What kind of effects then, does our modern, fast-paced, media-bombarding social construction have on our nervous system and our ability to act fully in every moment? If people are overwhelmed, what is their ability to seek change and be effective social actors? Possibly slowing down and appreciating the environment and our links to it is the first step in awareness and motivation for change.
